Brotherly Love
“It’s the dream we didn’t realize could come true,” said Walt, whose brother, Owen, moved to LIFE six years ago.
Owen, 29, lives alone in LIFE’s supported independent living community in Hyannis. It has dawned on Walt, 32, that certain responsibilities will fall on him as their parents age.
“The caretaker role grows greater as you get older, so it’s wonderful having peace of mind to know Owen’s in a place where he’s comfortable and happy,” said Walt, who lives in Washington, D.C., where the brothers grew up. Their parents have since moved to Cambridge. “People at LIFE are all ages, living full, robust lives.”
Since moving to Hyannis, Owen has become more and more self-sufficient. He has had jobs at Michaels, Starbucks, Regal Cinemas, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Ocean State Job Lot. He aspires to become a professional artist. Before the pandemic, he was taking animation classes. He also takes piano and horseback riding lessons. “I love to go out on fun adventures — bike rides or going to the beaches,” said Owen, whose favorite memory is the LIFE group trip to Bermuda.
