Dancing her way into a coaching job
It all started with Zumba.
Eleven years ago, Heidi Campinha was introduced to LIFE through the Riverview School, where she was teaching Zumba classes. She soon began teaching Zumba to the residents at LIFE and loved every minute of it. In the back of her mind, she was always hoping a full-time position would open up, allowing her to spend more time with the residents.
“Teaching dance to the them was so rewarding,” said Campinha, who was also working as a personal trainer at the time. “I was having fun and they were enjoying it so much. It was the highlight of my day.”
When a position in direct care opened three years ago, Campinha grabbed it. In the past year, she transitioned again and is now working as a LIFE coach, helping to guide residents in all areas of independent living. She meets weekly with the eight Mashpee residents in her care to meal plan and grocery shop. She assists with the planning of medical appointments and various transportation needs.
“I love the one-on-one right now,” said Campinha. “It’s been wonderful to be a part of their lives, to form friendships and to hopefully make their lives better. It’s almost a parental role, preparing them for success in life.”
Though retired from personal training, Campinha still teaches Zumba. She lives in Wareham and she has two daughters and two grandchildren.
